Flora
As one of the most common species of Mangrove, the river mangrove is a small salt-resistant tree commonly found in coastal areas.
Unlike other mangroves, this species forms dense thickets alongside riverbanks and intertidal zones. This helps play a vital role in supporting marine biodiversity and stabilising sediments to reduce erosion.
The river mangrove produces green fruit which ripens to red during summer months. River mangroves are sometimes confused with the black mangrove, with the main differences being that the river mangrove’s leaves do not have an indentation at their leaf tip and leaves of the Black Mangrove do not have salt glands.
River Mangrove flowers smell like rotten bananas at night! This scent helps attract moths, which act as their primary pollinators.
