The Native Elm tree is a common rainforest species; however, it is mostly seen by streams on damp, alluvial soils.

The tree continuously sheds its bark, which is dark brown and scaly with irregular patches. This species is a popular food tree for a number of butterflies and birds, including the brown cuckoo-dove.

This species has ‘toothed’ leaves, meaning the edges of each leaf is lightly serrated.
