Grey Mangrove

Name
Grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina)
Location
Coastal
Size
3 – 15m

The grey mangrove is one of the most resilient and widespread mangroves in Australia. It offers coastal protection by helping to reduce erosion and create a buffer against storms and tidal surges.

Growing up to 15m, this species has distinguishing light-grey bark made of thin, stiff, brittle flakes – which is how it got its name.

The grey mangrove produces small yellow flowers and salt-tolerant seeds which germinate whilst still being attached to it.

Interesting Fact

Grey Mangroves can tolerate highly salty water, even saltier than seawater! They do this by excreting salt through their leaves or storing it in old leaves that eventually fall off.
