Up to 30cm

Eelgrass is a type of seagrass that grows in shallow coastal waters. A flowering marine plant, eelgrass forms dense underwater meadows that provide a safe home for many sea creatures.

These meadows help stabilise the sea floor, reduce coastal erosion, and improve water clarity. Eelgrass also absorbs carbon and releases oxygen into the water, keeping the ocean healthy.

Dugongs eat eelgrass when it’s available, so these meadows are an important part of their diet.
