Common on the eastern sea board, the giant water gum thrives in basaltic or fertile alluvial soils. Its bark is a scaly reddish light brown, with depressions caused by the shedding of scales of bark, and prominent buttresses form at the tree’s base.

The giant water gum boasts pretty white flowers, which reveal fruit ranging in colour from pale blue, to lilac and deep purple.
